The introduction of Annex SL (where standards have 10 identical clause numbering) has made it a lot easier to audit.
Now there are audit checklists available that combine the three main standards:
There are parts of each standard that are similar and can be audited at the same time. This contrasts with previous standards which had varying numbering systems and requirements.
Clearly all the elements of each standard need to be audited but Annex SL has made this a lot easier.
Our own integrated checklist runs to 28 Pages, so not an easy task but we believe that if carried out correctly our internal audits ensure complete compliance with the standards.
Here are some examples:
Clause 4.1 Context of the organisation coves all three standards
(Has the organisation determined external and internal issues that are relevant to its purpose and strategic direction that affect its ability to achieve the intended results of its QEHS – Quality, Environmental and Health and Safety – Management System)?
Clause 5.3 Roles, Responsibilities and Authorities covers all three standards
(Does top management ensure that the responsibilities and authorities for relevant roles are assigned, communicated and understood, and maintained as documented information?
Clause 9.3 Management Review covers all three standards
(Does top management review the organisation’s QEHS management system at planned intervals to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy, effectiveness and alignment with the strategic direction of the organisation?
Naturally there are elements where the individual standard does not pan across and these are treated separately.
We carry out integrated audits for our clients using these techniques.
